fundraising/grant writing, and would like to assist our efforts to improve farm animal welfare.

Fundraising & Development Position

​
Location: Remote, U.S.
Type: Flexible, up to 20 hours / week

Status: Volunteer with potential for compensation

 

About VAFAW

​

​

VAFAW is the only veterinary organization in the U.S. devoted solely to improving the welfare of farm animals. We advocate for animals used in food and fiber production by providing a veterinary perspective grounded in animal welfare and ethics. Our current focus areas are (1) preventing and mitigating pain experienced by farm animals; (2) promoting living environments that meet the animals’ physical and psychological needs; and (3) advancing humane end-of-life practices. We work towards this goal through education and advocacy.

 

We are looking for someone to help with the following activities:  (some of these may be shared with other VAFAW team members)

Strategy, Planning, and Team Leadership

​

  • Lead bi-weekly fundraising meetings. Set agendas and guide strategy.

  • Maintain and update the annual development plan that includes targets for grants, individual giving, and membership retention and growth.

  • Coordinate outreach programs, track metrics, and present reports.

 

Donor Development and Stewardship

​

​

  • Maintain and grow a living database of prospects with current notes, outreach history, and next steps.

  • Manage outreach for major donors.

  • Plan and support invitations for donor roundtables and feedback sessions.

 

Campaigns and Digital Giving

​

​

  • Support leadership team in design and execution of giving campaigns. 

  • Create and manage accounts on giving platforms such as Candid/GuideStar, PayPal Giving Fund, Benevity, Chariot, and similar.

 

Grants and Institutional Funding

​

​

  • Identify, summarize, and prioritize aligned funders using Foundation Directory Online and other sources.

  • Write grants with the team. Manage content, budgets, and submit complete applications on time.

  • Track communications, decisions, and reporting deliverables. Keep a clean grants calendar and file library.

  • Maintain and update organizational profiles on funder portals and Candid/GuideStar.

  • Track and report impact metrics.

 

Data, Reporting, and Systems

  • Work with the leadership team to manage our Neon CRM.

  • Produce simple monthly reports on membership data.

  • Assist in the development of an annual report.

 

Compliance and Coordination

​

​

  • Understand and maintain state charitable registrations.

  • Understand and maintain fundraising compliance regulations.

 

Ideal Qualifications

​

​

  • Two or more years in nonprofit fundraising or development. 

  • Demonstrated success with at least two of the following: grant writing, individual giving campaigns, donor stewardship, or corporate sponsorships.

  • Strong writing and editing skills.

  • Comfortable running meetings, setting deadlines, and moving a project forward.

  • Solid spreadsheet skills and basic reporting.

  • Mission alignment with animal welfare and pragmatic improvement work.

 

Nice-to-Have

​

​

  • Experience with Candid/GuideStar profiles, Foundation Directory Online, ProPublica’s NonProfit Explorer, PayPal Giving Fund, and Chariot (DAF).

  • CRM proficiency. Neon, Salesforce, Bloomerang, or similar.

  • Light design skills in Canva.

  • Understanding of third-party animal welfare certification, veterinary, or agriculture spaces.
     

Compensation and Benefits

​

  • This role starts as a volunteer with flexible hours.

  • VAFAW is actively raising dedicated funds to provide a stipend or part-time payment.

  • Pre-approved expenses are reimbursed.
